Reel-to-Reel Molding Process

The IDEALmold R2R is intended for packaging processes in which the substrate is supplied and transferred in reel form. Compared with individually loaded strips or panels, this type of production depends not only on the molding press but also on stable material feeding, positioning, tension control and output handling.

The complete process capability therefore depends on how the available machine was originally configured. Reel width, substrate structure, indexing method, mold layout and downstream handling must all be considered before the machine can be matched to a new product.

Substrate and Mold Compatibility

The R2R model designation does not automatically confirm that the available machine can process every reel-fed semiconductor product. Compatibility depends on the substrate material, reel dimensions, package pitch, indexing position, mold design, molding compound and required finished result.

Available IDEALmold R2R Configuration and Delivery Scope

Individual IDEALmold R2R machines may differ in press modules, production molds, reel loading and unloading equipment, substrate-guiding components, preheating arrangements and output handling systems. Before purchase, the available unit should be reviewed to confirm whether its actual reel path, tooling and molding configuration are suitable for the intended substrate and package. The final delivery scope is based only on the quotation and confirmed equipment list; production molds, reels, substrate carriers, product-specific tooling, external inspection equipment and downstream machines are included only when specifically stated.

Receiving, Startup and Initial R2R Trial

The system should be inspected and tested in stages before valuable reel material or molding compound is introduced.

  1. Inspect the packing, machine cabinets, press sections, reel-handling assemblies, control panels and safety guards.
  2. Photograph any impact marks, loose parts, damaged cables or displaced guiding components before moving the equipment.
  3. Compare the delivered machine, molds, reel-handling parts, tooling and accessories with the confirmed delivery list.
  4. Check that the press, mold, rollers, guides and substrate-transfer mechanisms remain secured after transportation.
  5. Confirm the electrical supply, grounding, compressed air, exhaust and other facility requirements of the actual machine.
  6. Start the controller and record all alarm messages before resetting the system or changing process parameters.
  7. Run the handling and press mechanisms through a dry cycle without production material or molding compound.
  8. After stable movement is confirmed, use suitable non-production reel material for an initial feeding and molding trial.

During the trial, observe substrate tracking, indexing accuracy, tension stability, mold entry and output handling over several repeated cycles. Stop testing if the substrate shifts, wrinkles, tears, loses alignment or repeatedly triggers the same alarm.

Molding Results, Material Handling and Parts Support

Incomplete fill, excessive flash, voids, substrate deformation or inconsistent molded results may involve the mold, molding compound, substrate position, preheating, pressure, temperature or process settings.

Reel-to-reel faults may also appear as unstable feeding, incorrect indexing, uneven tension, material drift, reel damage or failure to transfer the molded substrate correctly. These problems should be reviewed before production continues.

Record the alarm message and the stage at which the material stops or moves incorrectly. Photos of the reel path, substrate, mold, molded product and machine screen, together with a short operating video where available, can provide a useful starting point for review.
